Alligator Training and Enrichment

Gator Adventure Productions is at the forefront of Alligator Training. Yes, Alligators can be trained!

For more information go to: www.ReptileTraining.com

The founders of Gator Adventure Productions are the pioneers of Alligator training. They are requested at zoos across the world and have even been featured on National Geographic displaying Crocodilian training techniques. Not only does training make shows more entertaining, but it also is very beneficial for the animal. Through the efforts of Gator Adventure Production experts, Alligators and Crocodiles can be inspected and treated by Vets without being restrained with minimal stress.

Guests are always shocked to see ALLIGATORS obeying commands! We will keep you updated right here about our new developments in the exciting world of alligator training.

A big key in the training of alligators and crocodiles is enrichment.

ENRICHMENT:

Enrichment is a way we can provide our animals with mental and physical stimulation. We do this to tempt the natural inquisitiveness of animals in our care and relieve the regularity and boredom that readily available food, shelter and safety provide.

The goal of enrichment is to increase activity and stimulation levels in the captive environment. This may stimulate natural behaviors, increase activity, decrease stereotypical behavior and generally enhance the animals well being.

Enrichment Ideas for Alligators

Enrichment items are size-dependent.  Some items may require modification to be successful with certain sizes of alligators.

  • Live Prey (fish, insects, etc.)
  • Buoy -hard or soft floating object (boomer ball, boat buoy, rubber hose, etc.)
  • Ice Blocks (flavored or unflavored)
  • Change in water level or flow
  • Change in exhibit “furniture”
  • Change in shade/basking spots
  • Introduction of new animal
  • Alternative food items (fruits, vegetables, fresh meat, etc.
  • Larger food items (don’t cut meat to bite-size pieces)
  • Training Session
  • Water Sprinkler or Mist

Gator Adventure Productions recently fed watermelons to our Alligators as enrichment. You can see the video in our Media section.

Some observations we made from this enrichment session were; the alligators seemed to enjoy crunching up the melon. Some of them consumed all of it but most of them spit out the rind. They all ingested the pulp of the melon and Doofy (the large alligator) got the added bonus of crushing it.
